Celebrating 20 Years of Community Transformation

By: Green Man | January 2025

UDP has spent the past two decades transforming urban landscapes throughout the Carolinas, crafting vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive spaces. Rooted in a multidisciplinary approach, UDP integrates planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, and entitlements to deliver innovative solutions that foster community growth and enhance the built environment.

Revitalizing Iconic Spaces
Our projects, like Optimist Hall in Charlotte, exemplifies a commitment to adaptive reuse. Transforming a historic textile mill into a lively hub featuring restaurants, retail spaces, and outdoor gathering areas, UDP preserved the site’s heritage while aligning with modern urban needs. This redevelopment not only enriched Charlotte's urban fabric, but also fostered economic growth and community engagement.

Enhancing Neighborhoods
UDP has designed numerous residential and mixed-use communities, prioritizing connectivity, sustainability, and aesthetics. Charlotte projects such as Chantilly on the Green and Cedar Walk showcase UDP’s ability to create welcoming spaces where residents can thrive. These developments emphasize walkability, green spaces, and thoughtful integration with existing urban ecosystems.

We are also enhancing spaces in the Triangle area with projects like City Gateway (Raleigh, NC) and Academy Village (Fuquay-Varina, NC) designed to have big impacts in walkability and provide the surrounding community with new spaces to enjoy. These large mixed-use designs further demonstrate the thoughtfulness within our designs and the shared goal to create wonderful communities.

Innovating Through Collaboration
A defining feature of UDP’s success is its collaborative ethos. By involving all stakeholders—from clients to city officials—throughout the design process, we ensure that projects meet diverse needs and maximize impact. This holistic approach has been instrumental in delivering projects like Anker Haus as the first pocket neighborhood in Charlotte. Through the collaboration with the owner and city officials this neighborhood became a new alternative to single-family communities promoting community and innovation.

Another impactful project in the Mount Holly area is Dutchman’s Creek Greenway, in the Mount Holly area, which balances recreation with environmental stewardship. UDP, other consultants and city officials were able to restore a section of the greenway making it more accessible for the community with a concrete walking path and bridge connecting to secondary access point.

Building for the Future
As we continue to grow, our focus on initiatives that prioritize community engagement and innovative problem-solving, UDP is prepared to influence urban landscapes for decades to come.

In celebrating 20 years, UDP solidifies its reputation as a transformative force in urban development. The UDP team is composed of an amazing group with varying skills that when used in collaboration on projects is nothing less than amazing. Their adaptability to projects that range in size and scope truly makes every design amazing. Our projects portfolio stands as testament to the power of design in shaping vibrant and connected communities. We have had and continue to have the opportunity to be a part of some impactful projects at different points within the development life cycle. Thank you to everyone that has been with us for the journey, and we look forward to you joining us in the future!
